چکیده

A reinterpretation is made of previously published data concerning the frequency of the instability waves in the separated shear layer from a circular cylinder for Reynolds numbers in the range 103–105. An accurate fit to the observed variation can be achieved using a piecewise fit based on theoretical and empirical arguments. A logical conclusion is that the ratio of the frequency of the instability waves to the Kármán vortex shedding frequency is indeed determined by the boundary-layer properties at separation, as suggested by Bloor. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. Role of shear layer instability in the transition of boundary layer on a bluff body

The boundary layer on a circular cylinder undergoes a transition to turbulence at, approximately, Re=2 x 105. This is accompanied with a significant reduction in drag. Using a stabilized finite element formulation, we have conducted two-dimensional computations for flow past a cylinder using a very fine mesh close to it. It has been shown by researchers earlier that the genesis and formation of...

Shear Layer Vortices and Longitudinal Vortices in the Near Wake of a Circular Cylinder

J. Soria Department of Mechanical Engineering, Monash University, Clayton, Australia • Results are presented on (1) the shear layer vortices developing in the free shear layers located between the separation point and the first shed Strouhal vortex of a circular cylinder and (2) the longitudinal vortices developing in the braid region of the Strouhal vortices in the wake. Evidence based on flow...

The structure of primary instability modes in the steady wake and separation bubble of a square cylinder

Flows past symmetric two-dimensional bluff bodies such as the circular cylinder, the square cylinder, and the normal flat plate produce large separation bubbles which (in the steady restriction) may become very elongated at comparatively low Reynolds numbers. The present work focuses on the steady/symmetric wake of a square cylinder at Re ≤ 300, which loses stability to anti-symmetric two-dimen...

Transition to bluff-body dynamics in the wake of vertical-axis wind turbines

We present experimental data to demonstrate that the far wake of a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) exhibits features that are quantitatively similar to that of a circular cylinder with the same aspect ratio. For a fixed Reynolds number (Re ≈ 0.8 × 105) and variable tip-speed ratio, two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to measure the velocity field in the wake of four diffe...

Identification of aerodynamic sound source in the wake of a rotating circular cylinder

In order to reduce aerodynamic noise radiated from the turbulent wake of bluff bodies, vorticity structures and flow field around a rotating circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers between 102 and 104 were numerically investigated. Vorticity structures and resultant aerodynamic noise is strongly dependant on the velocity ratio, which is defined as flow velocity over rotational speed to the cylind...
